HUDSON SQUARE — It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas on Varick Street, where dozens of festive trees decorated by area businesses line the street.

The trees are a way to showcase the creativity of the businesses in the district, said Ellen Baer, president of the Hudson Square Connection, which purchased and distributed the 20 trees.

"It really felt like the small-town Christmas,"  said Liz Neumark, CEO of catering company Great Performances, who decorated ornaments for the trees Wednesday after enjoying a latke lunch in honor of Hannukah.

"No one thinks of Varick Street as a town square but that's what it felt like," Neumark said.

From the Trump SoHo Hotel's restrained silver and blue-themed tree to City Winery's wine cork and icicle ornaments, the trees show off the unique personality of each business, Baer said.

"It's getting all their creative energy out into the street," Baer said.

Instead of an angel, latin music club S.O.B.'s tree was topped with a t-shirt reading, in Spanish, "Someone who loves me very much has brought me this shirt from Colombia."

The tree's ornaments will be changed Thursday to reflect Brazilian Samba style, said Robin Gold, special events planner for the club.

So far, none of the ornaments have been stolen and the biggest danger to the trees, which were put up Nov. 30, has been wind gusts, Baer said.

Given the enthusiastic response to having the trees, Baer said the decorating may become a Hudson Square tradition.

"We're pretty pleased, it's been so much fun," she said.
