MANHATTAN — An accident on I-87 in Upper Manhattan killed one person and sent another to the hospital Thursday, police said.
A 35-year-old truck driver whose 18-wheeler broke down on the highway was hit by a minivan when he got out of the truck near West 178th Street and Amsterdam Ave. about 3:15 p.m., the Port Authority said. The driver later died at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, police said.
Traffic was diverted to side roads for more than an hour while authorities investigated.
At the scene Thursday afternoon, a Van-Pak 18 wheeler moving truck was in the rightshoulder . A maroon minivan was parked in the right lane.
Blood and medical debris were seen strewn across the highway.
The FDNY said that the two drivers were taken to New York-Presbyterian Hospital.
The surviving driver, believed to be male and 25, was in stable condition, FDNY said.
