MANHATTAN — Alien invaders won't likely be landing in New York City any time soon, despite the UFO hysteria that broke out after mysterious objects were seen flying over Chelsea on Wednesday.
A Westchester elementary school claimed the real story behind the floating orbs was that they were wayward balloons for an engagement party planned for one of their teachers, the New York Daily News reported.
A parent brought about 40 shiny white balloons to the Milestone School in Mount Vernon for a teacher's engagement party Wednesday when a strong wind blew some of them away, the paper said.
"UFO? They're crazy — those are our balloons!" the school official Angela Freeman told the News.
The flying objects were reported to both the Federal Aviation Administration and the NYPD on Wednesday.
"It's pandemonium 2010 right now," said an amateur videographer, who captured the scene on video. "There are UFOs flying above the city. ...Before there was only one, now there's like four. I'm freaked out."
