MANHATTAN — The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm watch for New York City on Monday, which was expected to stay in effect until 10 p.m.

Storms moved through Pennsylvania in the early evening on Monday and were expected to hit Manhattan about 9 p.m. The storms could last all night, according to meteorologists.

The expected thunderstorm came as a surprising ending to what was otherwise a clear day in Manhattan with lots of sunshine and a light breeze. Earlier in the day, the temperature rose to 75 degrees. Overnight, the temperature was expected to drop to 59 degrees.

The National Weather Service reported that the chance of precipitation in New York City was 80 percent, with rain likely and possibly a thunderstorm between midnight and 3 a.m. on Tuesday.

The storms were expected to clear by morning.
