LINCOLN CENTER — Vera Wang revealed her 2011 spring/summer collection at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week on Tuesday, but the majority of her pieces were in the hues of a dark and stormy night, rather than a bright and verdant spring day.

The collections of other designers such as Carolina Herrera and Carlos Miele played with bold colors and spring-like prints, but Wang’s garments were primarily black, gray, or soft pastels and all the models walked the runway in high ankle boots with crystal-studded heels.

Despite the unseasonal color palette, Wang impressed with a series of dresses and skirts featuring sculpted twisting pleats at the waistline, airy sheer mini-dresses with thin trains trailing behind, and a subtle hint of Asian influence in the prints and origami-like folding of fabrics.

The Twitterverse lit up with talk of the runway show from those who were able to score spots inside the tent.

“One cannot think of a less summery collection than Vera Wang's. Ankle boots? Dark gray? Black? Come on!” wrote Twitter user JuliaDaleNY.

Others shared that opinion, such as user TheLooksForLess who said, “so n love with the Vera Wang runway, but there is nothing spring summer about it so far. ALL black, shades of gray, pops of crimson!”

A handful of celebrities attended the show, including “Vogue” editors Anna Wintour and Andre Leon Talley, tennis star Serena Williams, and Olympic gold medal figure skater Evan Lysacek, for whom Wang designs competition costumes.

Wintour may not have been all that impressed with Wang’s collection, it seemed, as she was spotted typing on her phone at her front row seat during the show.
