LOWER EAST SIDE — Fans of the popular indie-rock band Spoon were turned away from a daytime show at the Cake Shop Monday that drew a line of colorful hipsters all the way down Ludlow Street.

The extent of the show's advertising was a Twitter post by the band Sunday, which simply read, "We're playing a short, free lunchtime set at Cake Shop in NYC tomorrow. Entrance at 1245, show at 1pm."

Despite the short notice and lack of publicity, staff at Cake Shop said Monday they were at capacity and were forced to turn some fans away.

New York University student Emily Wheeler, 20, was between classes and heard about the show on music blog Brooklyn Vegan.

"I don't have my next class until 3:30 and I'm not hungry, so I thought I'd see Spoon," said the photography student.

Another fan, who did not want to be named, said she had told a "little white lie" to free up her schedule.

"I can't go to tonight's show, I didn't see them in Jersey last night, so this is my one chance," she said, but didn't comment further on her deception.

For those who couldn't squeeze into the lunchtime set, tickets are still available for tonight's Spoon show at Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn.
