MANHATTAN — The state comptroller’s office is launching an in-depth investigation to root out fraud and inappropriate overtime payments at the MTA, according to the New York Daily News.

The office of Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli could publicly announce the audit on Monday, the paper reports, and it is anticipated to be the most exhaustive look into the MTA’s finances ever conducted.

Another audit conducted last year showed that the MTA’s overtime costs were unnecessarily high, and also revealed that workers were being paid for time that they had not worked, according to the News.

"We welcome the controller's assistance as we continue to fulfill our commitment to reduce overtime,” Jeremy Soffin, an MTA spokesman, told the paper.

Last September’s audit exposed the MTA’s handling of overtime assignments and payments, the paper reported.

“Uncontrolled overtime has been the rule rather than the exception at the MTA,” DiNapoli said in a statement earlier this month.

“The MTA is cutting services, raising fares and tolls and laying-off employees, but it should be doing more to control expenses.”
