MANHATTAN — The newest trend in high-end Manhattan home furnishings is the luxury fish tank, according to the New York Times.

Aquariums as large as 700 gallons are popping up in the Manhattan apartments of those who can afford to spare the space and the cash, which adds up to multiple thousands of dollars, the paper says.

Manhattan interior designers say that custom aquariums are becoming the hot statement piece in spacious New York apartments for two reasons, the Times reports.

Designer tanks are popular pieces at upscale restaurants, lounges, and clubs, which provide New Yorkers with inspiration for the aquarium’s home installation. What’s more is fantasy fish tanks are a definite way to impress for the wealthy.

On top of the expensive cost of the tank itself, its installation, and constant maintenance, these aquarium owners aren’t stocking their tanks with run of the mill goldfish, the paper reports.

Exotic fish, sharks, and eels can cost hundreds —if not thousands — of dollars each.
