MANHATTAN — Apple announced Friday how iPhone 4 owners can get their free bumper case that are supposed to fix a reception problem with the device.

iPhone users can download an app onto their phone from the Apple Store and then use it to select the case they’d like.

People who the bought the phone before July 23 will have until August 22 to request the case, while everyone else will have 30 days from their purchase date to apply.

Apple came under fire by users who said holding their phone in a certain way caused them to lose reception. Steve Jobs admitted to the so-called “death grip” and announced the company would give away the bumper cases, which he said will alleviate the problem.

Despite the technical snafu, the company’s profits continue to soar, with reported earnings over $3 billion for the third quarter of this year.
