MANHATTAN — New York City's unemployment rate dropped again in June for the sixth straight month, according to the state Labor Department.

The rate of unemployed New Yorkers dropped to 9.5 percent, despite the end of thousands of federal census workers' jobs, which had bolstered the job market in the early months of the year, the New York Times reported.

The unemployment rate has been dropping steadily after it peaked in 2009 at 10.5 percent. The current rate of 9.5 percent brings the city nearly level to the national rate.

The private sector added 8,300 jobs in last month, with the strongest gains made in leisure and hospitality and in construction, the two most economically sensitive sectors.

The rate was 9.6 percent in May.
