INWOOD — Shots rang out at an Inwood housing complex on Sherman Avenue early Tuesday morning, at the same time that police said they were carrying out a narcotics-related investigation in the building.

Several witnesses said they heard between five and 10 gunshots at approximately 8 a.m. in the building at 165-175 Sherman Avenue, between West 204th and Academy streets.

At that time, NYPD were executing a search warrant on the sixth floor of that address, police said.

Police would not confirm whether the shots heard were related to their investigation.

Workers at Inwood Paint and Hardware, next door to the building, said they saw a police officer exit the building with a bloody elbow.

But Inspector Andrew Capul, who was captain of Inwood's 34th Precinct and currently helps oversee all precincts in Manhattan North, said there were no injuries.

“There was no one hurt, nobody was hurt,” he said.

Dozens of uniformed and undercover officers as well as detectives were at the location.

Police blocked off traffic on that stretch of Sherman Avenue and limited the flow of tenants entering and exiting the building throughout the morning.

A police spokeswoman said the investigation is ongoing and no further details are available at this time.
