UNION SQUARE — A section of the new $3.8 million Union Square Park playground was closed off again this week, as some parents continue to worry about the safety of their children.

The Parks Department re-opened the west side of the playground on Wednesday after fixing some of the rubber tiles on the plaground floor. The repair, said a spokesperson, was minor.

"Some had sand that needed to be removed from underneath them and resealed," the spokesman said. "Other tiles had holes in them so they were replaced."

But with several closures since the playground opened six months ago, some parents continue to fret.

"It's inexcusable," said Pamela Gold, founder of West Village Parents, who takes her two children to play in the playground but only under strict supervision. "These mistakes are baffling. You build a brand new playground in this day and age, how can you have so many mistakes?"

In May, after parents reported that a metal climbing dome was becoming too hot in the sun, the Parks Department roped it off while it added a canopy for shade. And in April, a spinning dish had to be removed because it rotated too fast.

But Jaime Fierstone, 34, who regularly visits the playground with her six-month-old daughter thinks that parental supervision is the best solution.

"Any playground can be dangerous," she said. "At least the Parks Department is aware of the problems here."
