EAST HARLEM — An early morning blaze in a hallway threatened residents of a 16-story housing project in East Harlem on Friday.

Residents of the Robert F. Wagner Houses said they woke up to thick black smoke as firefighters got the blaze in the fifth floor hallway of under control.

A FDNY spokesman said no one was injured. Firefighters were called to the mattress fire at 6.34 a.m.

Carmen Nazario, 66, said she and her husband were making their morning coffee when they heard banging.

"My husband went and opened the door, the hallway was full of smoke and a firefighter yelled 'close the door.'" Nazario said when she finally left her apartment, the corridor was covered in a thick black goo.

Janitorial staff were dragging the charred remains of a bed frame out of the building, and mopping up water that had leaked onto the floor below on Friday morning.

"It's ridiculous, people should know better," she said.
