A Russian accused of spying on the US for the Kremlin has been left red-faced by sexy photos of her published by the media.

Anna Chapman, who lives in the Financial District, is "embarrassed" that she's being seen as a flirtatious party animal, her lawyer told The Associated Press.

"She was embarrassed by some of the photos that were obviously taken from her Facebook page," said Ronald Baum.

"The truth is she (is) probably no different than your typical single 28-year-old woman in New York City.

"She runs a successful business, goes out at night. She dates men, enjoys a social life."

Chapman, the daughter of a Russian diplomat, was charged with acting as an unregistered foreign agent in a federal sweep that took down 10 accused agents operating in the USA.

Prosecutors say they were living in plain sight, many leading unassuming suburban lives.

Feds claim Chapman, a divorcee, communicated with a Russian agent every Wednesday, sending information from her laptop to a van parked outside Manhattan locations.

While the details of what she shared have not been reported, a financier who says he met Chapman at more than one Wall Street gathering claimed that she was eager to get close to people in power

Baum, who has spent hours with Chapman since she was arrested, described her as "very frightened."

He said she was concerned she would be deported back to Russia.

Chapman's British ex-husband. Alex Chapman, has claimed that her father is a former KGB agent, a charge Baum suggested was untrue.

"I won't go into the circumstances of divorce, but he may be somewhat bitter about it," he said.
