MANHATTAN — New York City's favorite web slinger is about to get an infuse of new life from across the pond.
British actor Andrew Garfield has been picked to replace Tobey Maguire in the role of Peter Parker on the big screen in "Spider-Man 4," according to several reports.
Garfield, who starred in "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus," beat out Jaime Bell ("Billy Elliott"), Frank Dillane ("Harry Potter"), and "Star Trek" star Anton Yelchin to play the Manhattan mutant, NBC reported.
The next "Spider-Man" film will feature the character using his unique skills to address "contemporary human problems and superhuman crises," according to Sony.
Maguire and director Sam Raimi disappointed fans of the friendly neighborhood hero's movie franchise by backing out of the film in January. They didn’t publicly explain the reason for their decision.
New York Magizine reported Raimi wanted more money for computer-generated-imagery after seeing James Cameron’s 3D action flick "Avatar."
"Spider-Man 4" is scheduled to be released in 2012. The first three "Spider-Man" movies combined to gross $1.1 billion domestically.
