FINANCIAL DISTRICT — Local food and the people who love it are returning to the South Street Seaport this weekend as New Amsterdam Market launches its biggest season yet.

The theme of Sunday’s market is Bread Pavilion, with nine bakers including Amy’s Bread, Balthazar Bakery and Sullivan Street Bakery turning out their best artisan loaves. More than 50 other famers and vendors will be on hand with everything from fresh fruits and vegetables to locally milled flour.

New Amsterdam Market is moving closer to becoming a permanent fixture in lower Manhattan, as the monthly markets this summer will give way to weekly events in the fall.

Robert LaValva, the market’s founder, said the most exciting thing about the growth is the way vendors are forming relationships and pioneering new creations together.

For example, Anne Saxelby of Saxelby Cheese Mongers teamed up with Lauryn Chun to from Mother-in-Law’s Kimchi to make a grilled-cheese and kimchi sandwich, available this Sunday, which LaValva describes as “a really unusual combination of flavors."

New Amsterdam Market will be held Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on South Street between Beekman Street and Peck Slip.

This weekend also marks the first Taste of Front Street, a fundraiser for the new Spruce Street School that is modeled on Taste of TriBeCa. A $25 ticket to Saturday’s event buys attendees five “tastes” from local restaurants, including Stella, SUteiShi and Il Brigante.

Other Front Street merchants will have promotions as well, including The Salty Paw, which will offer free frozen yogurt for dogs.

Taste of Front Street will be held on Sat., June 26 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Front Street between Beekman Street and Peck Slip.
