MANHATTAN — Nuns aren't the only ones on the Empire State Building's do-not-light list. Apparently, the military has a spot on that roll, too.

The U.S. Marine Corps asked the landmark to illuminate in branch colors of scarlet and gold for its anniversary on Nov. 10, 2008, the Daily News reported.

"We were rejected," Gunnery Sgt. Alex Kistakos told the News. "Whoever it is that's running hte building, they certainly could be making better decisions about who it is that they choose to honor."

The building has rebuffed requests by the Catholic League to light up in blue and white for the late Mother Teresa's 100th birthday in August.

Empire State Building owner Anthony Malkin has said that there is a standing policy against celebrating religious figures in lights.

City Council Speaker Christine Quinn has criticized Malkin's decision and is urging New Yorkers to celebrate Mother Teresa's Aug. 26 birthday by volunteering, according to the New York Post. She has also called for residents to shine their own lights from their home windows to honor the nun's life.
