MANHATTAN — Backlash from residents of a celebrity-filled block in Greenwich Village may force the city to alter the route of the Gay Pride Parade again.
The neighborhood block association representing people who live on West 9th Street, including Uma Thurman and Barbara Bush, launched a letter-writing campaign and pressed local leaders to reroute the parade after the NYPD announced in February it would be shortened and diverted to 9th Street to save money.
Arthur Finn, the Pride March organizer, said he received a phone call from Christine Quinn Thursday advising him that the route could be changed back to West 8th Street, the New York Times reported.
In the letters, residents complained that the crowds would trample and ruin their manicured gardens, the Times reported.
The neighborhood association was also concerned that the sidewalk may collapse, since hollow vaults exist beneath the ground from when the city once stored coal, the paper said.
Finn said he had no issue with the complaints and was fine with returning the parade to its original route.
"It's very understandable that they're concerned about their homes," Finn told the Times.
