UNION SQUARE — Kids setting off firecrackers sent commuters fleeing from the Union Square subway station Wednesday amid fears that a gunman had opened fire.

The source turned out to be kids setting off firecrackers near the L train  platform, two levels below the street, about 11 a.m.

NYPD officers stationed at the Union Square district station investigated the noises and confirmed that they were caused by fireworks.

No arrests have been made in connection with the incident, police told DNAinfo.

The incident occured just after 11 a.m. and caused some commotion in the Twitterverse.

"My wife said she just heard gunshots in Union Square and people were fleeing the L train platform," Twitter user Powhida wrote of the situation.

Not everyone in the area heard the the noise, but were nonetheless relieved by the police report.

"Thank God it was only firecrackers," said subway performer Natalia Paruz, 36, who was playing her saw near the entrance to the station at the time of the incident.

"We know what happened in the London subway."
