Worker Injured in Upper East Side Construction Accident Updated June 7, 2010 3:21pm

UPPER EAST SIDE — A large concrete slab fell from the roof of a parking garage inside a tony Fifth Avenue building Monday afternoon, injuring a construction worker’s arm, police said.

The 10-by-13-foot slab became dislodged as crews were performing maintenance work in the residential building’s underground garage between East 69th and 70th streets, pinning the worker’s arm between the concrete and a pipe, police and fire officials said at the scene.

The man was transported to New York-Presbyterian/ Weill Cornell hospital, but the injuries were not life threatening, fire and police officials at the scene said.

The man had been working on the three-level garage’s lowest floor when the incident occurred around 1 p.m., FDNY Deputy Chief Michael Mullins said at the scene.

He added that crews had been performing repair work on the garage’s ceiling since Thursday.
