New York City was on a tornado alert Sunday as stiflingly hot weather was expected to end in drenching thunderstorms.

Meteorologists put all five boroughs on twister alert until 8 p.m.

It follows high humidity and temperatures that the National Weather Service said reached 87 degrees in Central Park on Sunday.

That was expected to collide with a cold front due to arrive in the city mid-afternoon.

The thunderstorms are expected to be so heavy, an inch of rain could soak the city in just one hour, the National Weather Service told the Daily News.

The storms are also expected to bring strong winds and large hailstones.

It will be followed by cooler weather, with Monday's temperatures expected to be in the low 70s.
