FINANCIAL DISTRICT — Police rescued a man who jumped into the East River near Wall Street Thursday morning.

Members of NYPD Harbor Unit were patrolling in the area when they received a call around 11 a.m. of a person in the water, police said.

The man, who appeared to be in his 20s, leapt into the river near Wall Street wearing a pair of shorts and a mesh T-shirt, a police officer on the scene said.

The river moved more swiftly than the man expected, and he grabbed on to a log to stay afloat, the officer explained.

The man quickly drifted upriver, passing by the South Street Seaport at Pier 17, the officer said.

He was floating in the middle of the channel near the Brooklyn Bridge, still clinging to the log, when the Harbor Unit unit caught up to him near Fulton Street around 11:20 a.m., the officer said.

Police officers discussed the rescue shortly after it happened Thursday morning.
