UPPER EAST SIDE — A mysterious couple has been picking up the tab for randomly chosen strangers at restaurant Spigolo at 1561 Second Avenue, the New York Post reported.

"I was eating at the bar with my parents the weekend of Mother's Day— and we really splurged—but when we asked for the bill, the bartender said, 'It's been taken care of,' " Katie Barnhart told the Post.

"They also picked up the bill of two women sitting next to us," Barnhart told the paper.

Barnahart's bill came to $200.

Bartender Paula Lukas told the Post that the couple, who remains anonymous, doesn't usually wait to see the reaction of the people they choose.

Although the couple are regulars at the Italian eatery, manager Abby Merz told the paper that there's no particular night of the week where diners have a greater probability of having their check picked up.

"I have no idea how they choose people," Merz said to the Post. "It's an anonymous, random act of kindness."
