LOWER EAST SIDE — A cyclist was struck by a car Monday night at the corner of Essex and Rivington Streets in the latest of several Lower East Side accidents.

The collision occurred just one block away from what has been dubbed one of the most dangerous intersections in the city.

An unidentified male cyclist suffered head injuries and was transported to Bellvue Hospital, an FDNY official said. No information was available on the man's condition.

Shortly after the crash, police on the scene were seen questioning a man and a woman while an ambulance drove away. A black SUV sat with a shattered windshield just north of Rivington next to a bike on the ground.

Just last week, the city installed a bike lane on Rivington and recently painted one on Stanton Street to try to protect cyclists from the traffic on Delancey Street.

According to a recent report by Transportation Alternatives, the surrounding area is one of the most dangerous for cyclists and pedestrians. The intersection of Delancey and Essex saw 119 such crashes between 1998 and 2008.

Cyclists at the scene of the accident Monday said it is scary to see tragedies like this so often in the area.
