UPPER EAST SIDE — Bargain drink specials and a promotional pub crawl along Second Avenue in Yorkville have created a post-college bar scene in the East 80s.
With beer selling for 25 cents and Margaritas for $2, these Upper East Side bars aren't for the wine and cheese crowd.
Pat O'Brien's, the first stop on the pub crawl scheduled for May 22, advertises 25-cent beer between 6:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Fridays.
A Barbecue restaurant chain, Brother Jimmy's, has three bars between East 77th and East 92nd Streets. Their happy hour specials include $3 Pabst Blue Ribbon beer tallboys and $2 frozen margaritas.
Other bars offer 25-cent Buffalo wings and $3 mixed drinks.
The 12 bar tour is expected to draw 1,000 people, said Josh Weiner, senior event manager with Lindy Promotions, which is sponsoring the event.
In a tough economy, bargain drinks attract a younger crowd looking to party on a budget, Weiner said.
"This gives them a chance to do so more affordably," he said.
Tickets for the pub crawl are $15, or $10 with a canned food donation, and participants can check in at Pat O'Brien's at 1701 Second Avenue between 1 p.m. and 6 p.m.
In order to keep noise levels down and not anger the neighbors, the tour will end at 9 p.m., Weiner said.
The result of the specials are not necessarily elegant but have created a niche market in the community.
"Nice bar for the 20 something crowd," wrote a Zagat reviewer of Tin Lizzies, a dive fixture at 1733 First Avenue.
"Forty-year-olds are not welcome," the user said.
