MANHATTAN — Forecasters say New Yorkers should prepare for a scorching weekend, with temperatures expected to approach record-breaking highs for the season.

The mercury is expected to rocket to 89 degrees in the course of a sunny Saturday, topping the daily record of 87 set in 2001, according to AccuWeather.

Sticky, humid conditions will accompany the heat, which means that temperatures will feel more like the low 90s.

Sunday is expected to hit a high of 87 degrees — not quite record-breaking but still well above the average of 67 — with a chance of thunderstorms, meteorologists said.

"ACs definitely will be needed this weekend," said AccuWeather's Angelica Campos.

The mini heat wave is expected to have Manhattanites shedding the coats they donned during an unseasonably chilly start to the week and instead donning shorts and T-shirts.

This will be the second time in less than four weeks that New Yorkers will battle high heat; April 7 broke records when the temperature climbed to 92 degrees in Central Park.

Things are expected to cool down a bit as the work week begins with highs in the mid to upper 70s for Monday and Tuesday, AccuWeather forecasted.
