MANHATTAN — The New York Mets stumble back to Citi Field for a 10-game homestand after dropping a dismal 2-4 road trip.

The Mets offense managed to scrape out just three hits against Adam Wainwright in a 5-3 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday to drop their record to 4-8 on the season.

The Mets lost two of three against the Cardinals, with their lone win coming in Saturday night's 20-inning marathon game at Busch Stadium.

Mets fans may disagree, but New York third baseman David Wright insisted the six-game trip to St. Louis and Colorado wasn't a complete bust.

"I think our starting pitchers settled down and found a comfort zone and our bullpen is pitching solid," Wright told the New York Post. "And hopefully this [homestand] there is more hits to be had.

The Mets will send Jonathan Niese to the mound on Monday as they open a four-game series against the Chicago Cubs at Citi Field.

Wright thinks the team is starting to gel, but they won't win games unless they starting hitting better.

"What is going on in the clubhouse is where it needs to be, we just need to do a better job of going out and executing," Wright added.

The Mets are hitting just .224 as a team and their nine home runs rank them 22nd in all of baseball.

New York designated first baseman Mike Jacobs for assignment, opening the door for them to call up top hitting prospect Ike Davis from Triple-A Buffalo.

Jacobs was batting .208 with one home run in 24 at bats. Davis, 23, is hitting .364 with two home runs at Buffalo.

"Offensively we have to take it up a notch," manager Jerry Manuel told the Post.
