CHELSEA — Following months of anticipation, representatives from the cheap-chic grocery store Trader Joe’s confirmed that a new Sixth Avenue branch of the boutique supermarket will open this year.
“We are scheduled to open a store in Chelsea,” said Trade Joe’s spokeswoman Alison Mochizuki. “We have not confirmed a date, but it is scheduled to open within 2010.”
Trader Joe’s signed a lease for 41,000 square feet of space in the Mattel Building at 675 Sixth Ave., at 21st Street, in November, the New York Observer reported.
Mochizuki remained mum the specifics of the space, but did acknowledge that the plans do not include a wine store like many of its other outposts.
Trader Joe’s has a store on E. 14th Street off Union Square, and another is slated to open on the Upper West Side later this year.
