Nearly 45,000 lucky runners were selected in a lottery Wednesday for the chance to compete in November's ING New York City Marathon.

A record-setting 120,000-plus applicants entered the lottery, which was announced live online at noon.

"I got an e-mail a couple hours ago, and I'm excited," said Lynn Berman, 29, who was the first Manhattanite picked in the lottery.

This was the third time he applied but the first time he was acepted.

"It's a doubled-edge sword," Berman added, "because now I have to pick up the training."

Berman was one of nine runners to be selected first overall and will receive a gift package from race organizers the New York Road Runners.

However, runners like Albany native Carrie Barown, 30, weren't so lucky.

"Last year I checked constantly, and this year I sort of forgot about it until a friend was excited and sent me a message [saying], 'I got in,'" she said.

In addition to the lottery, it was announced that two of America's best distance runners — defending champ Meb Keflezighi and Deena Kastor — will be competing in the marathon.

For those who did not get selcted, the New York Road Runners encouraged them to continue competing in charity runs and apply again next year.
