MANHATTAN — Watch out for buses before stepping off a curb on the Upper East Side.

Two intersections in the uptown neighborhood are among the top five locations for bus accidents in the city, according to data from NYC Transit obtained by the New York Post.

There were 29 bus accidents involving pedestrians and other vehicles — the most in the city — at E. 57th Street and Third Avenue in 2009, the data showed. Two blocks away, at E. 59th Street and Third Avenue, there were 17 accidents. That was good for fourth-most citywide, according to NYC Transit data.

"The bus drivers make turns too tight around this corner," Will Attia, manager of Gigi Cafe at E. 57th and Third, told the Post.

Other people in the neighborhood also blamed traffic signals and poor signs or the accidents.

"We want customers and pedestrians to be well informed and safe," NYC Transit spokeswoman Deirdre Parker told the Post.

She added that the agency came up with its dangerous intersections list "to encourage pedestrians to use extra caution when crossing at these corners because they have been the scene of accidents in the past."
