UPPER WEST SIDE — The recent rainfall has not only broken records, it has also damaged phone lines and cut off service to some buildings in the neighborhood.

More than ten inches of rain in the last week has damaged Verizon phone cables at 257 Central Park West, near the corner of W. 85th Street, along with other buildings in the area that are also experiencing limited service.

Numerous Verizon service trucks are on the scene and a spokesperson for Verizon said the service should be restored by 9 p.m Thursday.

"We have a crew there drying it out, exposing the cables, sometimes using air dryers," said John Bonomo, a spokesperson from Verizon. "It's as simple as that."

He said that 21 customers in that building had been effected either by complete service cuts or by the intrusion of a static noise while using landlines.

Because AT&T rents the Verizon phone lines, customers who use either service providers are affected.

Workers on the scene said that they had a lot of work to do regarding cable damaged in the unusually heavy rains. One van had pulled up to service the nearby 5 W. 86th Street building Thursday because customers there were also reporting problems.

One resident reported her building having no land line service for two days. She had noticed numerous Verizon trucks along Central Park West from W. 85th Street to Columbus Circle servicing the area.
