CENTRAL PARK  — An English Elm tree that crushed a car over the weekend after becoming uprooted in Central Park due to the excessively soggy ground has been put to good use by the Parks Department.

The 100-year-old tree, which fell midday Saturday because of its weakened root system, was quickly turned into mulch to help newly planted trees grow more easily, Parks officials said.

The fallen tree did not injure anyone when it slammed into a vehicle on Fifth Avenue near East 93rd Street on Saturday.

With the increasingly wet conditions on Tuesday, there was some concern that a similar situation could occur.

“There were no incidents today,” a Parks Department spokesperson said, adding that people were advised to "exercise caution when walking through the park.”
