MANHATTAN — A homeless man was crushed to death while sleeping above a freight elevator on a Gramercy sidewalk outside the upscale eatery Japonais, police sources said.

Michael McDermott, 49, was crushed to death Wednesday evening when a worker at the restaurant put the elevator in motion without realizing the man was sleeping on the metal doors that cover it , the New York Post reported.

McDermott, who police sources said was homeless, was killed by the pressure of the rising elevator, the Post reported.

"We are supposed to have someone check to see if the gates are clear. I guess, last night, nobody did," a Japonais worker told the Post.
