MANHATTAN — More than two-thirds of New York voters think Gov. David Paterson should stay in office despite the scandals engulfing him, the latest poll said Tuesday morning.

But the news is not so good for Attorney General and likely gubernatorial candidate Andrew Cuomo, whose approval rating dropped 13 points since last week.

The Marist Poll indicates Cuomo is is suffering from his role in the Paterson investigation, with a 54 percent approval rating down from 67 percent last Tuesday.

The poll showed that 68 percent of the electorate thinks that Paterson should serve out his term, despite his involvement in a top aide's domestic abuse case and allegations he lied about receiving free Yankees tickets to the World Series.

Just 28 percent of voters want him to resign, according to the poll.

But Marist Poll director Dr. Lee Miringoff points out it's not exactly a ringing endorsement of the embattled governor.

"Instead, the jury is still out on Paterson in the court of public opinion until further information is known,” Dr. Lee Miringoff said.

“In the short run, voters are giving him the benefit of the doubt.”

While voters may not want him to give up his office, Paterson still has a record-low approval rating of 19 percent, and 58 percent of voters disapprove of the way he is handling the budget.
