MANHATTAN – In an unofficial stimulus package for local artists, the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City is offering a $15,000 prize to an artist to paint the pedestrian mall.

The wining design, which is expected to be installed by mid-July, will provide a temporary fix as the Department of Transportation decides on a permanent plan for the space.

The contest is part of Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s “Green Light for Midtown” project, which is intended to reduce traffic congestion in the area, though initial results have been mixed.

The deadline for submissions is Friday, April 16, 2010, and the contest is open to “designers, organizations, and non-profits living or operating within the city.”

The city is offering $15,000 to the winner of a Times Square pedestrian mall redesign contest.
