MANHATTAN — Three people were arrested during a student protest, involving more than 150 people, Thursday at Hunter College on the Upper East Side, the New York Times reported.

The arrests were made as the demonstrators attempted, unsuccessfully, to occupy the school’s seven-floor main building, the Times said.

Two of the people arrested, a 20-year-old woman and a 21-year-old man, were charged with trespassing, criminal mischief and possession of graffiti instruments, according to the paper. A third person was written up for disorderly conduct.

None of the arrested protesters were students at Hunter, according to Times' report.

Simultaneous demonstrations took place at colleges throughout the country, including NYU, as part of the National Day of Action for Public Education.

"The purpose of the event is to express our solidarity with UC occupiers in California,” where administrators are increasing tuition by 33 percent, a participant in the NYU protest told NYU's Washington Square News.
