MANHATTAN — Gov. David Paterson overcame endless rumors of a delayed or canceled formal campaign announcement by issuing his campaign kick-off schedule on Tuesday — followed Wednesday by the news that the New York City event would, in fact, be delayed because of the number of elected officials who were unable to attend.

“At the request of a growing number of supporters who want to be part of our campaign kick off and can’t be here because of scheduling conflicts, we are pushing back our Harlem endorsement event one week,” Paterson campaign spokesman Richard Fife said in an e-mailed statement.

Paterson has reportedly had problems recruiting Democratic officials to join him for his campaign announcements, and pundits are saying that if the governor doesn't get a large audience at these events, his campaign is toast.

The campaign event will be held at the same location as previously planned, Our Children’s Foundation on 125th Street, on Feb. 28 and Paterson will do an official campaign announcement as planned in Hempstead, L.I. this Saturday.
