BATTERY PARK CITY — Wind and snow whipped through the streets of lower Manhattan on Wednesday, but for residents it was cause for celebration.

Two-year-old Griffin woke up at 4 a.m. in his Battery Park City home because he was so excited to spend the day frolicking in the snow with his dad, mom and 8-year-old brother, Quinn.

“I love the snow, it’s fun!” Griffin said.

“The kids were so excited last night we went out to Paragon Sports and bought all of this snow gear — to bad it wasn’t on sale,” said Griffin’s dad, who was towing his two boys on a sled behind him. The family planned to build a snowman in the neighborhood later in the day.

At a nearby dog run, Marilyn Walter and her dog, Casey, enjoyed some quality time.

“People are happy and in a good mood,” Walter said. “The salt can be rough on the dogs paws, but we manage.”

Downtown resident Bruce Ruiz had a good solution for dealing with the salt and snow — skis.

Ruiz is a cartographer by day, but on the weekends he works on a ski patrol in Vermont. The outdoor enthusiast usually bikes to work, but on Wednesday he took advantage of the snow to test out his skis in City Hall Park.

“Skiing in the city feels strange because everyone is so distracted — we get caught up in the game,” Ruiz said. “I’m stoked, I love it. I’m grateful we have four seasons.”
