FINANCIAL DISTRICT — The New York Stock Exchange said it had made the necessary preparations for the inclement weather and held a normal trading day Wednesday, despite the blizzard on Wall Street.
Maintenance crews salted and shoveled outside the NYSE at 11 Wall Street from the early hours, ensuring that the stock exchange would continue “business as usual,” the NYSE said.
"Work work work! It's all good for me," a bundled up member of the maintenance crew said cheerfully, as he shoveled outside the entrance to the NYSE.
The exchange said they had fielded several calls stemming from rumors that they were closing early, but the speculation was unfounded and they will remain open until 4 p.m.
A NYSE worker wearing the signature brightly colored vest of a trader hoped that would change.
"As of now, we're not going home early today, but everything is a little slow," he said. "I sure would like to, though."
Trading on Wall Street has been light today, with only 1.9 billion shares traded by early afternoon as compared to 5.7 billion traded by close of business on Feb. 10, 2009.
