SOHO — An art exhibition portraying the daily struggles of Manhattan's homeless population is on display in a SoHo gallery until the end of the month.
Called “Portraits in Deep,” the exhibition at SoHo Photo on White Street shows 20 digital color portraits depicting homeless New Yorkers or residents who struggled with drug addition and mental illness.
“The camera has helped me see a lot of things,” said photographer Leroy Washington, who lived on the streets for nearly five years. “You can take that perspective and use it.”
The artwork was produced as part of a class at Pathways to Housing, which places homeless New Yorkers in apartments and offers classes in computer skills or photography.
Pamela Parlapiano taught students in her photo class to look at themselves as creative individuals.
“Some photographers have trouble opening up," Parlapiano said. "But these photographers are creative and volatile and willing to go over the top. It’s a place to appreciate their abilities.”
“Portraits in Deep” is showing until the end of January.
