MIDTOWN WEST — Police evacuated businesses and office buildings along Seventh Ave. as they responded to a suspicious package at the corner with West 53rd Street in Midtown.

The bomb squad was called in to investigate the package, which was located next to a sidewalk trashcan.

The nearby Sheraton New York was not evacuated. Gov. David Paterson and Rev. Jesse Jackson were at the hotel for a Rainbow PUSH Coalition conference. A Paterson spokesperson said they did not plan to leave the hotel and would proceed with the conference as scheduled.
