MANHATTAN — A mural that was supposed to cover part of a construction fence at Ground Zero will be relocated elsewhere, the New York Times reported.

The Port Authority, which chose the mural with the city's Department of Transportation after a competition, made the decision because "we didn't think ultimately that any of the submissions was extraordinary enough, given that it's the World Trade Center fence," Stephen Sigmund, a PA spokesman, told the Times.

The mural, designed by the Sage & Coombe architecture firm, was supposed to have been installed last month along Church Street between Liberty and Vesey Streets, the Times reported. It will be moved to Maiden Lane at William Street.

"We’re glad that we could find another site in the neighborhood for this vibrant artwork, which will enliven the streetscapes of Lower Manhattan,” Janette Sadik-Khan, the city's transportation commissioner, said in a statement to the Times.

Sage & Coombe declined to comment for the Times' story. The firm's Web site was down Monday morning.

The design of the mural was not publicly revealed.
