MANHATTAN — Fiterman Hall, a 15-story building at the Borough of Manhattan Community College that was destroyed on 9/11, has been completely torn down.
Workers deconstructed the final pieces of the building, which had shrouded in black netting for years just north of the World Trade Center site, last week, according to the Downtown Express.
The building will be rebuilt as a 14-story tower that will have classrooms, student lounges and faculty offices for the BMCC, according to the paper, and will also have a public cafe and art gallery. The new Fiterman is scheduled to open in spring 2012.
A groundbreaking on the new construction was scheduled for Tuesday.
“It’s just so exciting,” Catherine McVay Hughes, of Community Board 1, told the Express. “Having [Fiterman] down indicates that redevelopment is really moving forward.”
