BATTERY PARK CITY — Organizers of an unusual art competition at the World Financial Center are hoping to inspire residents and workers — inspire them to donate cans to holiday food drives, that is.
Budding artists have created dozens of sculptures from cans of food as part of the Canstruction competition at the Winter Garden.
The idea behind the competition, which has installations all over the world, is not only to get people to gawk at the unusual pieces of art, but to donate cans to charity drives.
The giant 3D objects contain anywhere from 1,500 to 20,000 cans of food, and top out at 8 feet high. Among the 40 structures installed at the World Financial Center, is a wave, the Earth and giant a slice of pie.
After the competition the cans of food go to fill community food shelter cupboards through City Harvest.
Canstruction Secretary Annie Tan said she was pleased to return to the Winter Garden for the second year.
“This is an ideal location you have people from the workplace as well as tourists,” Tan said.
Judging and a dinner take place this Monday evening from 6:30 to 8:00. The display will be open to the public until Dec. 8.
There is no admission, but people are asked to donate a can of food.
