MANHATTAN — Carnegie Hall was the scene for some serious star power as Glamour magazine honored its Women of Year at a ceremony Monday night.
The event is designed to recognize courageous and inspiring women who are changing the world.
"We all need role models," said Glamour magazine’s Editor-in-Chief Cindi Leive, "No matter where you are in life whether you're 18 or 81 you still need people to inspire you and that's what tonight is all about."
This year's honorees included pop artist Rihanna, designer Stella McCartney and tennis star Serena Williams.
Former President Bill Clinton presented poet Dr. Maya Angelou with the Lifetime Achievement award.
"I am grateful to be a woman," Angelou told the crowd. "I must have done something great in another life."
Other honorees included Laura Ling and Euna Lee, journalists who were imprisoned in North Korea, Google vice president Marissa Mayer and Maria Shriver.
"It's amazing," said comedienne and honoree Amy Poehler, "It's such an amazing group of women and to be included in it is really overwhelming."
U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Riceand the One Million Signatures Campaign, a group of Iranian women working on behalf of women's rights in Iran, were also recognized by Glamour.
