Graffiti Art Critic Hits TriBeCa Sculpture Park

By DNAinfo Staff on September 25, 2009 11:44am  | Updated on September 25, 2009 11:43am

An outdoor public art exhibition in TriBeCa became truly interactive this week when a vandal added his own grafitti to the artwork.

The unapprehended art critic spray-painted the words "This is not art!!" in thick black script onto one of the seven sculpture pieces on display.

The LentSpace exhibit opened last week near the Holland Tunnel on a plot of land owned by Trinity Church on Wall Street.

The exhibit is officially open from 7 a.m. to dusk each day since it opened Sept. 18, but the public space has only minimal fencing, according to the New York Times. The graffiti showed up some time Wednesday, according to the Web site Curbed.

The sculptures include a massive vertical concrete slab and wooden benches, along with works made from flagpoles, ladders, concrete and steel, the Times reports.

The art display was organized by the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council and Trinity Church. It was scheduled to be open until the real estate market returns and Trinity Church could use the space for development, according to The Villager.

It was not clear what would happen to the vandalized artwork. Organizers could not immediately be reached for comment.
