MANHATTAN — City inspectors failed to check the cables of a crane two months before Tuesday’s fatal crane collapse on West 34th Street, according to published reports.
The city Department of Buildings performed a routine inspection of the crane in January but simply crossed out the section of the form covering scrutiny of the cabling, the New York Post reported.
Michael Simermeyer, 30, was killed and three other workers injured at the 7 train extension project site at West 34th Street and 11th Avenue.
At least one cable snapped in the collapse of the Manitowoc 4100 crane.
City officials said the crane was in use during the January inspection and the cables couldn’t be examined, the Post noted.
A follow-up inspection had been slated for Thursday.
