Scarves Tie Together Hot Looks in Chilly Weather, Fashionistas Say

By Della Hasselle | February 9, 2012 3:43pm

UPPER WEST SIDE — As winter turns into spring, fashionistas hanging around the tents at Lincoln Center say one cold weather fashion trend — wearing scarves — isn't going anywhere.

Fashion experts and bloggers say that several scarf styles can tie together even the most boring of outfits, including wearing two scarves at once, in double layers, or knotting a scarf turban-style around the head for a bright, unique look.

"I have a few different silk scarves from vintage stores, and I like this one because it's pink. It has little bows that tie it up as well, so it doesn't blow away," English intern Rebekah Thompson, 21, said, pointing to her bright pink, fake fur H&M scarf that she wore over a vintage silk one.

For Thompson, the "double scarf" look is both fashion-forward and warm.

"I like the fur look but they're not often the warmest things to wear. I like something tight around my neck," she said.

The vintage silk scarves were also handy because of the variety of looks they can provide — including a single-knot style, a double knotted cowl or a turban-like headpiece created using twists and knots around the head.

For fashion blogger and Lower East Side librarian Julie Turley, scarves are the perfect year-round accessory for anyone who doesn't have a ton of dough to dish out on the latest bangles or fancy necklaces.

"It's a very easy way to change up an outfit," Turley, 47, said. "It adds dimension, and accent, and all those cliches."

"It's also like poor man's jewelry, poor women's jewelry."

Wardrobe consultant Amy Havins, 25, agreed.

"If you have a plain jacket or something they just add a little pizzazz," Dallas resident Havins said.
