MANHATTAN — A fire broke out on a busy East Village street Saturday morning, authorities said.
The small blaze began on a balcony at 77 St. Mark’s Place, near First Avenue, about 10:30 a.m., the FDNY said.
The fire was extinguished shortly thereafter and did not extend into the building, officials added. No injuries were reported.
A staffer at the restaurant on the ground floor of the building, La Palapa, said firefighters told her garbage had caught fire.
"It was no big deal," said Judy Maeda, the restaurant's maître d’. "It was just smoke, no flames."
