EAST VILLAGE — Pudding is the main course — and the only dish — at a new sweets shop that opened Friday on St. Mark's Place.

Called Puddin', the cozy cafe by a young Brooklyn chef spoons out eight varieties of the creamy confection, from traditional chocolate and tropical coconut to a butterscotch that contains real scotch.

"It's nostalgic and it's fun and it's enjoyable," said Clio Goodman, 23, Puddin's owner and a lifelong pudding fan. "It just brings back good memories."

Goodman, a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America who has worked at Cafe Boulud and Union Square Cafe, decided to focus on pudding after she whipped up a batch of butterscotch for a client, and he raved about it so much that soon his friends and family were asking for more.

"I joked that I should open a shop," Goodman said. "It just kind of exploded from there."

At Puddin', the pudding is served solo, starting at $5.50 for 8 ounces, or diners can add a range of toppings for $1 apiece, including salted caramel sauce, hot fudge, candied mixed nuts, house-made sprinkles and dried cherry compote. Those who want a more substantial dessert can sample one of the six pudding parfaits, starting at $6.50 for 8 ounces.

The "Classic" combines chocolate and butterscotch pudding with layers of whipped cream, while the "Banana Cream Dream" combines banana pudding, graham cracker crumbs, freshly baked banana cake and whipped cream.

Puddin' offers a couple of unusual pudding flavors, like lemon and coffee, and also incorporates pudding into the few other desserts that are sold, including cakes and pies.

To wash all that dessert down, customers in the tiny four-seat cafe can sip on Stumptown Coffee or house-made hot chocolate, served with an optional shot of salted caramel sauce.

Puddin', 102 St. Mark's Place, is open daily from 11 a.m. to 1 a.m.
